New Painting - Day of the Dead 2
Another painting in progress is Day of the Dead (#2) Celebration. The subject has interested me because some of my loved ones (Mother, Father, Husband, and various other relatives) have passed within a 10 year period. (My Dad passed a month ago from a long heart related condition.) The girls are quite cheerful as to convey the idea that death is not so terrible, but it is a culmination of a good life. Also, it is the beginning of a new and Eternal Life with our Maker. I had been so depressed, but painting the images of these girls hiding behind the cheerful "death masks" helped me out of the sad feelings I was experiencing. The girls are quirky and having fun. No doubt, the celebration is intended to make people deal with the death process in a positive way! The scene takes place in Los Angeles with a large Mexican population. Both young and old participate with costumes and food, especially bread and candy in the shape of skulls and skeletons. Also, flowers are lain at alters commemorating dead relatives!
