My Art Critique With Joseph Todorovitch

Today I went to an individualized art critique at the California Art Cub. It's part of a new program of mentoring which was a wonderful experience for me, especially since not having had the formal art training in my formative years. Our mentor of the day was Premiere Realist Joseph Todorovitch, who last year won the Grand prize in the Portrait Society of America International Competition. Probably the biggest award of its kind for portrait art!

It was a big honor to get this mentoring and critique. He has a very positive approach to his critiques and I learned quite a bit of new insight into technique and visual concepts, even the type of paints I was using. Priming my canvases to be smoother would pick up more distinct brush work. He said canvas weave can be a distraction. His manner is very delightful, informal, and low key and not at all "stuck up." Especially when you realize how famous he is! There were 5 of us members in all, within a 2 hour period. As I said a lot is learned, even from hearing critiques on another Artist!

It is amazing that no matter how much you think you have learned about your craft, you begin to realize you never stop learning!!!!!! It was great fun, but I will have to wait another year to get another critique. This is a very popular program. In fact, I was on a waiting list!
